The SAVE Act

On April 10th, the United States House of Representatives passed the so-called Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act - Republicans’ latest attempt to suppress the vote under the pretense of election security.

While the SAVE Act is considered dead on arrival in the Senate and is not expected to become federal law, the bill has already spawned copycat legislation moving through state legislatures across the country.

Let’s be clear: non-citizen voting in federal elections is already illegal, and multiple audits and investigations have confirmed that instances of non-citizens registering and voting is extremely rare. Yet the SAVE Act seeks to impose burdensome proof-of-citizenship requirements that would threaten to disenfranchise millions of eligible Americans.

These measures will disproportionately impact our most vulnerable and under-resourced communities, from millions of women whose married names differ from their birth certificates to seniors, low-income Americans, and naturalized citizens who may not have the required paperwork readily available.

This bill creates barriers, not solutions. It targets voters instead of addressing any real threat to election integrity. This is voter suppression, plain and simple, and we will not allow partisan fearmongering to roll back the hard-won voting rights of the American people.
